About Blackpool
Blackpool is Britain's original seaside resort, built on Victorian pleasure-seeking and still unapologetically devoted to it. This is a town of illuminated trams, candy floss, kiss-me-quick hats and three piers, where the Blackpool Tower has watched over the Fylde coast since 1894. It's brash, loud, and proud of it — a place that never pretended to be sophisticated and doesn't need to.
What makes Blackpool genuinely special is how completely it commits to the fairground spirit. Pleasure Beach remains one of the best amusement parks in Europe, home to the Big One rollercoaster and rides dating back over a century. The Blackpool Illuminations, switched on every autumn since 1879, turn six miles of promenade into a tunnel of light that stretches the season well into November. The Winter Gardens and Tower Ballroom host proper ballroom dancing under ornate Victorian plasterwork, a tradition kept alive partly by Strictly Come Dancing filming there each year.
This is a town best suited to families chasing an old-fashioned British seaside holiday, stag and hen parties looking for cheap drinks and late nights, and anyone with a soft spot for faded grandeur and genuine nostalgia. It's not the place for quiet luxury or refined dining — the beaches are wide and windswept rather than postcard-perfect, and parts of the town show their wear. But few places in Britain deliver such concentrated, unfiltered fun for so little money, and few towns have such a distinct, enduring identity.
