About this experience

Mount Merapi, one of Yogyakarta's most active volcanoes, left behind a landscape of hardened lava fields and ruined buildings after its powerful 2010 eruption. This jeep tour takes you across that terrain aboard a classic open Willys-style vehicle, driven by a local guide who knows the trail's landmarks and history.

Along the way you'll stop at Mini Museum Sisa Hartaku, a house that was buried in volcanic debris and now stands as a preserved record of the eruption. Other stops include Alien Rock, a volcanic formation weathered into the shape of a face, a survival bunker once used for shelter, and the Water Attraction, where the jeep drives directly through a shallow river stream. Choose the longer route and you'll also reach Petilasan Mbah Marijan, the shrine to Merapi's famed spiritual guardian who stayed on the mountain during the 2010 eruption.

Four track options run from a 1-hour short loop to a 3-hour long track, plus a sunrise departure at 04:00 WIB that covers the medium route in 2 hours. Pricing is per jeep, with each vehicle holding up to 4 passengers, and the standard tour operates daily from 07:00 WIB.

What to expect

Your driver-guide picks up the route from the meeting point near the base of Mount Merapi, heading straight into the volcanic terrain left behind by the 2010 eruption. Depending on the track you've booked, the jeep winds through lava fields and dips into a shallow river crossing at the Water Attraction, with stops along the way to get out and explore on foot.

Highlights include the preserved ruins at Mini Museum Sisa Hartaku, the face-like Alien Rock formation, and a bunker once used as an emergency shelter. Those on the medium, long or sunrise tracks also reach Petilasan Mbah Marijan, the shrine dedicated to Merapi's guardian. The whole experience runs between 1 and 3 hours depending on the route chosen, with the sunrise option departing well before dawn to catch the mountain in early morning light.

Things to note

 • Wear closed-toe shoes and casual or athletic clothing, as the jeep ride is bumpy and dusty
 • Bring a jacket if joining the 04:00 WIB sunrise departure, as early mornings on the mountain are cold
 • Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time
 • Bring cash for any personal expenses or optional extras not included in the ticket price
 • Pricing is per jeep for up to 4 passengers, so groups larger than 4 will need to book an additional vehicle
 • The route may be adjusted depending on field conditions on the day
