About this experience

The British Consulate of Dagou is located on Xizi Bay, where the sea and sky are the same color. The word Dagou comes from the Chinese pronunciation of "Takow" (Pingpu language, meaning bamboo forest), which is rich in bamboo in Kaohsiung. Later, because the Japanese thought the place name "Dagou" was indecent, they changed it to "Kaohsiung". The Japanese word "Kaohsiung" is pronounced "taka-o", which is similar to the sound of "Dagou".

The British Consulate in Dagou is located on the Xizi Bay where the sea and sky are the same color. The entire British Consulate in Dagou is divided into two parts, the official residence on the mountain and the consulate at the foot of the mountain. The official residence on the hill is a post-Renaissance Baroque building. The red brick exterior, bamboo downpipes, stone carvings and round arches all reflect the differences of the British Consulate in Dagou. The first floor of the official residence includes a cultural and creative shop, a viewing platform and a courtyard. Standing on the viewing platform, you can have a clear view of the setting sun. There is an exhibition room on the second floor, which uses models, old maps and other interlaced lines to let visitors experience the rich stories of Kaohsiung's opening of the port for more than 100 years.

Visit the official residence of the consulate from afternoon to evening to enjoy the sunset photos of the West.

< /p>

The breeze up here was so refreshing. We walked around for a bit, bought a souvenir (if you spend 200nt you get 50nt off with admission ticket), and enjoyed some french fries and winter melon tea at the Rose cafe.

The museum itself consists of 1 small room of old photographs, a fascinating but modern book, and 3 modern models of old ships, one of them incomplete as missing its cannons. However, as the building retains its old world charm, has amazing sea views in 2 directions front and back, and friendly staff, it makes this place a pleasure to visit for an hour or more, especially if you stop for coffee. Worth seeing.

The consulate itself is great, but the walking path to it and the surroundings are terrible. A temple is right beside it and a noisy temple music was playing non-stop during our visit. I prefer not to see the artificial figures put on site.

Great place with wonderful views over the port and town. Good to watch the sunset from here. Big climb up lots of steps but worth it for the views.

A must see in Kaohsiung. Its Rose Hose Cafe is very popular and busy due to its nice setting and stunning views of Kaohsiung Harbour. Half price of entrance fee for seniors. Before reaching the consulate you may encounter wild monkeys along the way.
