About this experience
This 2-day guided tour takes you from Athens to two of Greece's most striking historical sites: Delphi and Meteora. On day one, you'll drive through the Greek countryside, passing Thebes, Levadia, and Arachova, before reaching Delphi, once regarded in Greek mythology as the center of the universe. Here you'll see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, dating to the 4th century B.C., along with a 5,000-seat theater and the stadium that once hosted the Pythian Games.
The tour then continues to Kalambaka, a town set beneath the rock towers of Meteora, where you'll spend the night. The second day is dedicated to Meteora's cliff-top monasteries, built atop cliffs that average 1,000 feet in height and first settled by hermit monks in the 9th century. Of the original 20 monasteries, six remain today, and you'll get to visit these while taking in views across the valley below.
On the return drive to Athens, the tour makes a short stop at the monument to Leonidas, the Spartan king who died at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Across the two days, this guided tour combines archaeological history, mountain scenery, and religious heritage in a single itinerary from Athens.
What to expect
The tour begins with a drive out of Athens through Thebes, Levadia, and Arachova, arriving in Delphi around midday. Here you'll walk through the ancient site, seeing the Temple of Apollo, the theater, and the stadium where the Pythian Games were once held, before continuing on to Kalambaka for an overnight stay beneath the Meteora rock formations.
Day two is spent exploring the monasteries of Meteora, built on cliffs that have drawn monks and visitors alike since the 9th century. After taking in the views from the rock towers, the tour heads back toward Athens, with a brief stop at the monument to Leonidas along the way. The full experience runs across two days, combining time at ancient ruins, a mountain town, and clifftop religious sites.
Things to note
- Bring a passport or ID card, which may be required for the trip
- Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven, ancient terrain
- Pack an overnight bag since this tour includes a stay in Kalambaka
- Dress modestly if visiting the monasteries, as religious sites often expect covered shoulders and knees
- Bring layers, as temperatures can vary between the coastal drive and the higher elevations of Meteora
- Choose your ticket type carefully, as accommodation level and language options vary between options
