Nikko Toshogu Shrine
关于此次体验
Nikko Toshogu Shrine stands as the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo Shogunate, who is enshrined here as a deity. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 as part of Nikko's Shrines and Temples, this sacred complex showcases approximately 50 buildings rebuilt under the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. Every surface displays intricate carvings and brilliant colours that represent the pinnacle of Edo-period craftsmanship.
The Yomeimon Gate serves as the shrine's centrepiece — so elaborate it's nicknamed "Higurashimon" (the gate where you could watch the sun set while admiring it). You'll find the famous Three Wise Monkeys carved here, part of a larger story about human growth and childhood education. The Sleeping Cat sculpture, attributed to master craftsman Hidari Jingoro, appears peaceful alongside playful sparrows, symbolising a world without war. The approach winds through towering cedar trees, creating a transition from the everyday to the sacred as you climb the stone steps.

The Yomeimon Gate commands attention with its overwhelming detail — you could spend considerable time examining the symbolic meanings behind each sculpture.
