Liverpool doesn't do modesty. This is a city that gave the world The Beatles, two of England's most decorated football clubs, and a waterfront so architecturally significant that UNESCO once listed it (a status controversially withdrawn in 2021, much to locals' irritation). What you get is a proud, working port city with a distinct accent, a sharp sense of humour, and a chip on its shoulder about being overlooked in favour of London and Manchester — a chip that's entirely unwarranted given what's on offer here.

The city's character was forged by immigration and trade: Irish, Welsh, Chinese and Caribbean communities all left their mark, and you feel it in the food, the music venues, and the fact that Liverpool has the oldest Chinese community in Europe. The Georgian Quarter's elegant terraces sit a short walk from the Albert Dock's Victorian warehouses, now stuffed with museums, and both are a world away from the roar of Anfield on a match day. It's a city that rebuilt itself hard after decades of industrial decline and the maligned reputation of the 1980s, and the regeneration around the Baltic Triangle and the waterfront shows the results.

Liverpool suits music obsessives, football fans, museum lovers, and anyone who wants a big, characterful city break without London prices. It's less suited to those after quiet, manicured prettiness — this is a city with grit under its fingernails, best enjoyed by people who like their travel with a pint in hand and a bit of backchat from the bar staff. Two to three days is enough to cover the essentials; music and football pilgrims will happily stretch that to four or five.
