Jeju is South Korea's answer to a volcanic escape hatch — a subtropical island 90 minutes by air from Seoul that feels like a different country. Built by a now-dormant shield volcano, its landscape is dominated by Hallasan, South Korea's tallest mountain, and riddled with lava tubes, black basalt coastlines, and over 360 smaller volcanic cones called oreum scattered across the island. UNESCO has recognized it three times over for its geology and biosphere, which tells you something about how seriously the terrain is taken here.

What separates Jeju from mainland Korea is the pace and the culture. Fishing villages still run on the rhythms of the haenyeo, the island's famed female free-divers who've harvested abalone and sea urchin by breath-hold for generations, some into their seventies and eighties. Inland, mandarin orange groves and black-stone-walled fields give the countryside a Mediterranean tint that feels nothing like Busan or Seoul. The island has also become Korea's honeymoon-and-selfie capital, so alongside working fishing harbors you'll find glossy botanical gardens, glass-walled cafés, and Instagram-baited photo museums, particularly around the west and south coasts.

This is a destination for hikers, road-trippers, and anyone who wants beach time without leaving Korean territory. Couples come for the resort towns and themed cafés; families come for the beaches, aquariums, and Hallasan's gentler trails; serious walkers come for the Olle-gil trail network, 425km of coastal and mountain paths broken into 27 numbered routes. It's less of a fit for travelers chasing nightlife or big-city energy — Jeju City has some bar scenes but the island's real currency is scenery, seafood, and slow mornings.
