This is Korea's oldest modern port, cracked open to foreign trade in 1883, and the layered history shows: colonial-era Japanese banks sit blocks from China's largest Chinatown outside China itself, while Songdo's glass towers rise a few subway stops away like a different century entirely.

What makes Incheon distinct is this collision of old and new happening in a genuinely lived-in port city rather than a manufactured tourist zone. You can eat jajangmyeon in the neighborhood where Korean-Chinese immigrants invented the dish, walk a preserved 1920s Japanese trading street, then ride a driverless subway to a car-free island beach an hour later. It's also just practical: if you have a long layover or an early flight, there's no reason to fight Seoul traffic when Incheon itself has real sights.

This city suits independent travelers who like a bit of grit with their history, families using the airport as a base who want low-stress day trips, and anyone curious about Korea's port-city identity rather than its K-pop postcard version. It's less suited to first-timers who only have two or three days total in Korea and want maximum palace-and-shopping density — for that, stay in Seoul and treat Incheon as a half-day add-on instead.
