What to expect

Asahiyama Zoo is located in Asahikawa. It is a very famous zoo in Japan, and it is also the largest polar zoo in Japan. Xushan Zoo is famous for its unique way of displaying animal behaviors. Through the unique design of the exhibition hall, animals can display their instinctive behaviors in a relatively free raising state, and at the same time, visitors can watch the natural state of animals without obstacles. In the seal hall, you can watch the spotted seals swimming vertically in the huge cylindrical tank. In the Polar Bear Pavilion, you can not only see polar bears wandering on the ground, but also see their energetic swimming in the water. In the penguin pavilion, you can watch penguins cruising 360 degrees in the water, and you can also see penguins walking in the snow outdoors in winter.

Highlights

  • The interplay of blue and white creates a dreamlike, almost surreal beauty.
  • Enjoy authentic farm-to-table meals made with fresh ingredients from Furano at this Hokkaido specialty restaurant, featuring a buffet with over 30 unique Hokkai
  • The white waters of Shirahige Waterfall cascade gracefully from the rocky crevices like silver threads
  • Meet adorable animals like penguins, polar bears, and seals at Asahiyama Zoo, and experience the wonders of nature.

We had such a wonderful time with our guide Yuichi Kudo! From start to finish, everything felt thoughtful, peaceful, and beautifully paced. Yuichi was very knowledgeable about Hokkaido without being overwhelming. We really felt connected to Hokkaido towards the end. And Hokkaido winter has so much to offer, the scenery alone was breathtaking. We were taken to spots we wouldn’t have found on our own and having the tour be private felt more intimate and unrushed with a friend! By the end, when it was time to leave, we were incredibly touched that we felt heartbroken to leave. If you want to experience Hokkaido and its hospitality, I highly recommend this tour. Of all the places we went to in Japan, this was our highlight and most memorable. Thank you so much :)

Another wonderful Hokkaido holiday with HNT. Friendly knowledgeable guide Vincent took us to the most amazing places from Lake Toya to Kushiro via beautiful views, fun activities and amazing wildlife. Highlights were snowshoeing in Shokyu canyon, Stellar’s Sea Eagles and the cranes. And not to forget a fabulous range of coffee shops. Great tour, great attention to detail. Our second visit with HNT and would highly recommend them.

Our group of 4 had a wonderful 8 day tour of Central and Eastern Hokkaido this past October that was arranged by Ido San of Hokkaido Nature Tours specifically tailored for our interests to see Hokkaido's wildlife in their natural setting, to enjoy scenic mountain vistas, and to experience traditional Japanese home cooking. We set off in a Toyota Vellfire 7-seater van from Sapporo with our guide Max San at the wheel. We went on nature hikes in Noboribetsu, Mt. Usu, Dasetsuzan National Park and Sounkyo Gorge with Max San guiding us to hidden waterfalls, deep caldera lakes, scenic mountain vistas, and steaming sulfur vents, mud pots, and geothermal pools heated by active volcanoes. The highlights were cooking a traditional lunch with Oba San and her granddaughter Miu San who were a great joy to meet! Also, preparing a soba lunch from buckwheat flour under the direction of Yonebayashi San and his wonderful wife at their soba farm in Shinshinotsu, Hokkaido. Max San was keen on spotting wildlife along the roads and trails, where we saw red foxes, white tail deer, egrets, red headed cranes, and the most amazing brown bear and her cub catching salmon in a river of the remote Shiretoko Peninsula. Overall, it was an awesome trip and I highly and enthusiastically recommend Hokkaido Nature Tours for your next visit to Hokkaido.

My husband and I took our parents to Hokkaido and booked HNT for a few days, it was the highlight of our trip! Our favorite experiences included glass blowing in Otaru, a wagyu beef experience, soba making, and a hot air balloon ride in Furano. Ido was very responsive and transparent during the entire planning process. Each experience had great guides that were well vetted and tailored for our small group. Our primary guide, Yuichi, was so much fun to travel with, he was our favorite part of the trip and shared so much information about each place we visited. The weather was snowy and he was a very safe driver through the snowstorm. We would definitely travel with HNT again and schedule more time with them to visit east Hokkaido.

My group of 5 have been on two separate 6 day tours with Hokkaido Nature Tours, and it exceeded our expectations on both occasions! Our guide, Yuichi, went above and beyond to tailor the experience to our preferences, ensuring every moment was meaningful and enjoyable. His deep local knowledge, especially when it comes to hidden gems and the best spots for local cuisine, made our journey truly authentic. We were treated to breathtaking landscapes and a wide variety of immersive activities—canoeing on serene waters, a traditional tea ceremony, and even a home-cooking experience that gave us a real taste of local life. Each day was seamlessly planned, and the accommodations were very comfortable. Ido’s thoughtful planning and attention to detail made both trips unforgettable. We wholeheartedly recommend Hokkaido Nature Tours for anyone looking to experience the heart and soul of Hokkaido.
