Alishan National Forest Recreation Area (阿里山國家森林遊樂區) was the main reason I went to the southern part of Taiwan. The ride going there was long and a bit dizzying, but the scenery along the way was beautiful. It was winter and really cold up in the mountains, but walking around the park was very enjoyable. There was so much nature to take in, and it felt peaceful just being surrounded by trees and fresh air. The train rides were a nice experience too, and we had some really good food during our mid-tour break. I’d love to come back someday on a DIY trip so I can explore the area more freely and take my time.

The place is very beautiful and spacious, highly recommended to visit at least once during your stay in Taiwan. But the trip to Alishan National Forest is quite far from Chiayi. Transportation options include buses and taxis. For buses, you can purchase tickets online at least one day in advance or use a Yoyo Card and credit card. For taxis, there will be plenty available there, so there's no need to worry. My advice is to depart early in the morning because the journey takes about 2-3 hours.

Alishan Forest is a truly magical place and one of the most beautiful mountain destinations in Taiwan. The cool climate, fresh air, and towering ancient cypress trees make it perfect for a peaceful escape into nature. The walking trails are very well maintained and easy to explore, even for casual hikers. The forest railway, scenic viewpoints, and misty landscapes create a unique and almost surreal atmosphere, especially early in the morning. It’s a great place for photography, relaxation, and learning about Taiwan’s natural heritage. Entrance fee: 300 NTD. However, if you arrive by shuttle bus and show your bus ticket at the entrance gate, you can get a 50% discount, which is a nice bonus. Don't miss 89.5 sunset. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Taiwan and looking to experience its natural beauty.

We drive to reach this place via mountain roads. It’s our first time to visit National Park in Taiwan. And it worth the visit after the long drive. The view is stunning. Fresh cool air. Huge park area where you can walk around with kids. Suggest to stay at least one night inside the park (there are many hotels inside the park) to enjoy this national forest.

Long drive (4hour/ way) fro’Taichung to Alishan but its completely worth it!! Soaking in fresh air, walking in the middle of big trees, giants tree… it is great experience. The hiking is not so difficult, many local elderly make the hike themself here I didnt know that there are some hotels inside the national forest, would recommend to stay here to fully experience the nature, the air, the walk and silence
