The Hague occupies an odd and wonderful position in Dutch life: it's the seat of government and the royal residence, home to the International Court of Justice and dozens of embassies, yet it sits directly on the North Sea with proper sandy beaches at Scheveningen. This mix gives the city a split personality — pinstripes and diplomacy in the city centre, surfers and fried fish stalls a fifteen-minute tram ride away. It never feels like a tourist theme park the way Amsterdam sometimes does, because it isn't trying to be one. People here go about ordinary lives, and visitors get to watch that from the inside.

The centre is compact and walkable, built around the Binnenhof, the medieval complex where the Dutch parliament still meets, ringed by the Hofvijver pond. Architecturally it's a strange, appealing jumble of Gothic gatehouses, 1930s Art Deco, and glassy ministry buildings, without the canal-house uniformity of Amsterdam. Mauritshuis, tucked beside the Binnenhof, is one of the best small art museums in Europe — Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring lives here, along with a tight, high-quality collection you can see properly in two hours rather than losing a whole day.

This is a good fit for travellers who want museum-quality culture without museum-scale crowds, for families who want a beach and a city in one trip, and for anyone slightly weary of Amsterdam's stag-party reputation. It's less suited to people chasing an all-night club scene or classic canal-ring postcards — for that, Amsterdam is fifty minutes away by train and an easy day trip in either direction. The Hague rewards a slower pace: a museum in the morning, lunch in a courtyard café, a walk on the pier at Scheveningen with chips and mayonnaise in hand.
