One Day in Johor: The Perfect Itinerary

By Matt CuckstonJuly 19, 20265 min read

If you're looking for things to do in Johor and only have a single day to work with, the good news is that Johor Bahru is very manageable on foot and by Grab. The city is compact enough to cover a solid mix of history, local food, and a standout experience or two without feeling rushed. This itinerary is designed to be realistic, enjoyable, and worth every hour.

Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Heritage, History, and a Proper Breakfast

8:00 AM – Breakfast at a Local Kopitiam

Start the day the way locals do: at a kopitiam. Head to any of the traditional coffee shops around Jalan Wong Ah Fook or the Johor Bahru City Square area. Order a kaya toast set with soft-boiled eggs and a cup of white coffee. It's simple, filling, and sets the right tone for the morning. Budget around 30 minutes here.

9:00 AM – Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple

A short walk from the city centre brings you to the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple, one of the oldest in the state. The architecture is detailed and well-preserved, and it's a calm place to start the day before the heat picks up. Spend about 20 to 30 minutes exploring the grounds.

9:30 AM – Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim and the Waterfront

From the temple, walk toward the waterfront and take in the view of the Straits of Johor. The Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, also known as the State Secretariat Building, is a short distance away and worth a look from the outside. The colonial-era architecture is impressive and makes for a good photo stop.

10:15 AM – Johor Bahru Trishaw Tour

For a more relaxed and memorable way to see the heritage quarter, consider booking a Johor Bahru Trishaw Tour. You'll be pedalled through the older parts of the city while your guide points out landmarks, temples, and street art. It's a low-effort, high-reward way to absorb the neighbourhood's character without walking in the morning heat. Tours typically run 45 to 60 minutes.

Afternoon (12:00 PM – 5:30 PM): Lunch, a Standout Experience, and a Football Detour

12:00 PM – Lunch at Medan Selera Meldrum Walk

Head to Meldrum Walk Food Court for lunch. This open-air hawker centre is popular with locals and serves a solid spread of Malay, Chinese, and Indian food. Try the laksa, char kway teow, or nasi lemak. Prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. Allow about an hour for lunch.

1:30 PM – JDT Buggy Tour at Stadium Sultan Ibrahim

After lunch, make your way to one of the more unusual things to do in the city. The JDT Buggy Tour lets you drive your own electric buggy around the grounds of Stadium Sultan Ibrahim, home to Johor Darul Ta'zim FC. It's a fun, interactive experience that gives you access to parts of the stadium most visitors never see. If you prefer something a little more over the top, the JDT Hummer Tour offers a ride through the stadium precinct in a Hummer limousine, which is as theatrical as it sounds. Either option runs roughly 45 to 60 minutes and is genuinely entertaining even if you're not a football fan.

3:00 PM – Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple

A short Grab ride from the stadium takes you to this striking Hindu temple, which is covered almost entirely in colourful glass. It's open to visitors of all backgrounds, and the level of detail inside is remarkable. Dress modestly and remove your shoes at the entrance. Spend around 30 to 45 minutes here.

4:00 PM – Explore Jalan Dhoby and Grab a Coffee

Walk or Grab to the Jalan Dhoby area, which has a growing number of independent cafes. Pick one that looks good to you, sit down, and take a break. You've covered a lot of ground and this is a good moment to slow down before the evening.

Evening (5:30 PM – 9:00 PM): Waterfront Dinner and a Relaxed Finish

5:30 PM – Stroll Along Danga Bay

Head to Danga Bay for the early evening. The waterfront promenade is pleasant at this hour, with views across the strait and a breeze coming off the water. It's a good place to walk off the afternoon and watch the sun start to drop.

7:00 PM – Dinner at a Seafood Restaurant

Johor is known for its seafood, and the Danga Bay area has several restaurants that do it well. Look for places serving chilli crab, butter prawns, or steamed fish with soy and ginger. Dinner here is the natural highlight of the day and worth spending time over. Budget around 90 minutes.

8:30 PM – Night Cap or Dessert

Wrap up the evening with a bowl of cendol or ABC (shaved ice with red beans and syrup) from a nearby stall, or find a rooftop bar if you prefer something stronger. Either way, it's a fitting end to a well-paced day.

A Few Practical Notes

Grab is the easiest way to get around Johor Bahru. Most of the spots in this itinerary are within a 10 to 15 minute ride of each other. If you're travelling with family and want to swap one of the afternoon stops for something more kid-focused, the Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast is about an hour's drive east and worth a dedicated day trip on its own.

Book any ticketed experiences in advance through TixLayer to avoid waiting around on the day. A little planning goes a long way when you're working with just 24 hours.
