Skip the tourist traps and dig deeper. In New Orleans, eat at Jacques-Imo's Cafe rather than anywhere in the French Quarter. Drive California's Highway 1 from Carmel to Big Sur instead of battling LA traffic. Book Yellowstone's Old Faithful Inn months ahead—it's the only place to stay in the park that actually matters. The national parks system here is unmatched globally, but visit places like Utah's Zion in shoulder seasons unless you enjoy sharing canyon views with thousands of others.

Americans are genuinely helpful to travelers, though tipping culture runs deep—20% minimum at restaurants, $2-5 per night for hotel housekeeping, and always tip your bartender. Distances are vast and public transport outside major cities is limited, so rent a car for anything beyond urban exploration. The country rewards spontaneity and road trips more than rigid itineraries.
