One Day in Nikko: The Perfect Itinerary

If you're looking for things to do in Nikko, you've landed in the right place. This mountain town in Tochigi Prefecture is one of Japan's most rewarding day trips, offering UNESCO-listed shrines, cedar-lined avenues, and some of the country's most dramatic natural scenery. Most visitors arrive from Tokyo via the Tobu Nikko Line or the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, then a local train. Either way, aim to be on an early train so you're at the shrine complex when it opens.

Morning: The Sacred Heart of Nikko (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
8:00 AM – Arrive and walk the cedar avenue
From Nikko Station, it's roughly a 30-minute walk uphill to the shrine area, or a short bus ride if you'd prefer to save your legs. The walk is worth it. The avenue leading toward the shrine complex is lined with towering cedar trees that set the tone for the morning.
8:30 AM – Toshogu Shrine
Start at Toshogu Shrine, the elaborate mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who unified Japan. The level of detail in the carvings, lacquerwork, and gold leaf is genuinely hard to take in all at once. The famous "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkeys are carved above the stable here, and the Sleeping Cat above one of the gates is another highlight. Budget at least 90 minutes to move through the complex without feeling rushed.

10:15 AM – Futarasan Shrine
A five-minute walk from Toshogu brings you to Nikko Futarasan Jinja Haiden, a far quieter shrine dedicated to the three mountains of Nikko. Where Toshogu is ornate and theatrical, Futarasan feels genuinely contemplative. The forested grounds and stone lanterns make it one of the more peaceful spots in the area, and it tends to attract far fewer visitors than its neighbor.
11:15 AM – Rinno-ji Temple
Wrap up the morning at Rinno-ji, a Buddhist temple complex just a short walk back toward the entrance of the shrine area. The Sanbutsudo hall houses three large gilded Buddha statues, and the Shoyoen garden behind the temple is a calm spot to sit before heading to lunch.

Afternoon: Waterfalls and Wider Landscapes (12:30 PM – 5:00 PM)
12:30 PM – Lunch in the shrine area
Head back toward the main approach for lunch. There are several small restaurants and teahouses along the road. Look for yuba, a local specialty made from tofu skin that's been a Nikko staple for centuries. It's served in soups, over rice, and as a side dish. Simple, filling, and genuinely local.
1:30 PM – Bus to Kegon Falls
Catch the Tobu Bus from the Nishi-Sando bus stop toward Chuzenji Onsen. The ride takes around 40 minutes and winds up the famous Irohazaka switchback road, which is dramatic in its own right. Get off at Chuzenji Onsen.
2:15 PM – Kegon Falls
Kegon Falls drops nearly 100 meters and is consistently ranked among Japan's top waterfalls. An elevator takes you down to an observation deck at the base where the full scale of the falls becomes clear. Spend 30 to 40 minutes here. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns red and orange, making it one of the most photographed spots in the country.
3:00 PM – Lake Chuzenji
A short walk from the falls brings you to the shore of Lake Chuzenji, formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. You don't need long here. A 20-minute stroll along the lakefront, taking in the mountain reflections on the water, is enough to feel the scale of the landscape before heading back down.

3:45 PM – Bus back to Nikko Station

Evening: Wind Down Before the Train Home (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
5:00 PM – Tobu World Square (optional detour)
If you have energy and curiosity to spare, Tobu World Square is a short bus or taxi ride from the station. The park features incredibly detailed 1:25 scale replicas of famous landmarks from around the world, from the Eiffel Tower to the Taj Mahal. It's an unusual way to spend an hour and works well as a late-afternoon wind-down before dinner.
6:00 PM – Dinner near the station
Settle in for dinner at one of the restaurants near Nikko Station. The area has several options serving kaiseki-style set meals, soba, and grilled dishes. Look for places that serve nikko yuba in multiple forms if you want to lean into the local food culture one more time. Most restaurants in this area close by 8:00 PM, so don't leave it too late.
7:00 PM – Head back to Tokyo
The last comfortable trains back to Tokyo run in the early evening. The Tobu Limited Express Spacia is the most direct option and gets you back to Asakusa in under two hours. Grab a seat, rest your feet, and let the day settle.

A Few Practical Notes
- The Nikko Pass (available for foreign visitors) covers round-trip train travel from Tokyo and unlimited bus rides within the area. It pays for itself quickly.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes. The shrine complex involves a fair amount of uneven stone paths and stairs.
- If you're visiting in late October or November, the autumn foliage around the shrine area and Lake Chuzenji is exceptional. Book trains in advance during this period.
- Most major sites open at 8:00 AM and begin closing around 5:00 PM, so an early start genuinely matters here.
One day is enough to see the best of what this area offers, as long as you're intentional about where you spend your time. The shrines in the morning, the falls and lake in the afternoon, and a quiet dinner to close it out. That's a good day.
