This is a place where a Michelin-starred hawker stall sells chicken rice for $5, where a strict no-chewing-gum law coexists with rooftop bars pouring $30 cocktails, and where four official languages and as many major religions share a handful of city blocks without much friction. It's Southeast Asia with the chaos filtered out, which some travelers find sterile and others find an enormous relief after weeks on the backpacker trail.
Good to Know
- Tipping is not customary — restaurants often add a 10% service charge plus 9% GST automatically, so check your bill before adding more
- Chewing gum is illegal to import and sell (medical gum is the exception), and littering, jaywalking, and vaping carry real fines — Singapore enforces its rules
- Get a tourist SIM (Singtel, StarHub, or M1) at the airport arrival hall for around S$15-20 with data — eSIMs like Airalo work well too
- Dress is casual and modest almost everywhere except upscale restaurants and clubs; cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and temples, and remove shoes where indicated
