Located on the east bank of the Miyagawa River that runs through Takayama City, Takayama Kamisannomachi Kodai-dori was once a thriving shopping street. In particular, Sanmachi, known as the sacred city of the gods, Kameninomamachi, and Kami no Sacred City in the Edo period, has well-preserved buildings and is a must-see when visiting Takayama. The area has been designated an "Important Group of Traditional Buildings Protection Area" by the Japanese government. Under the lattice windows of the mountain's ancient streets, there are rumbling canals, and earthen wine cellars hang "wine forests" made of fir leaves. Traditional candy shops and handicraft stores, specialty salty and sweet glutinous rice dumplings, grilled skewers of Hida beef, and more, attract tourists from the north and south.
