Cette excursion d'une journée complète associe deux des paysages les plus saisissants de Sicile : les pentes volcaniques de l'Etna et le canyon de lave sculpté par la rivière Alcantara. Après une prise en charge aux points de rendez-vous de Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Catania ou Linguaglossa, vous voyagerez en SUV ou en minivan jusqu'au front de lave laissé par l'éruption de 2002, qui a détruit les installations de ski de Piano Provenzana et une partie de la forêt de pins Ragabo. De là, une randonnée facile de 3 km vous emmènera de 1 665 m à environ 1 775 m d'altitude, à travers les bouleaux jusqu'aux cratères Sartorius, avec une vue s'étendant vers la Calabre et les îles Éoliennes.
En chemin, vous porterez un casque et une lampe torche pour explorer la Grotta dei Ladroni, un tunnel de coulée de lave partiellement creusé à la main — une date, 1776, est gravée au-dessus de son entrée, marquant son ancienne utilisation comme grotte de stockage de neige. Une halte dans un restaurant local de l'Etna suit, avec un premier plat, de l'eau et du café inclus. L'excursion se poursuit ensuite à travers Castiglione di Sicilia, l'un des villages officiellement reconnus comme les plus beaux d'Italie, en route vers les Gorges de l'Alcantara.
