What to expect

Fengyi Academy is located next to the Chenghuang Temple in Fenggangli, Fengshan City. It was founded in the 19th year of Jiaqing (1814 AD), when Wu Xingcheng, the magistrate at that time, initiated donations and land donations, and was built by Zhang Tingqin, a candidate for mentoring. There are many special architectural landscapes in the academy, such as the screen wall in front of the gate, the drum stone on both sides of the main gate and the two dragons attached to it. It has various functions such as shrine and free school. At present, the Kaohsiung County Government has listed it as a third-level historic site. It is the oldest and complete academy among Taiwanese academies.

We visited Fongyi Academy while we were in Kaohsiung. It is in between of Fongshan and Da-Dong MRT stations. It is a historic site where previous Academy was initially constructed in 1814-1823. Then it was used as a military hospital during Japanese colonial period and then restoration work competed in 2013. It is free for locals but for visitors - there are fees 66NT per person. It is interesting and nice place to look around and taking pictures with adorable characters sculptures. There is a room where you can dress up like an ancient officer and take picture ( it is free). It took us 30-45 mins for taking pictures and look around. Also there is a temple at the back of the compound . Overall we enjoyed our visit.

Unexpectedly fruitful. Planned to stop by for a few photos, turned out learning the wholesome story behind this academy, the efforts of building restoration, and a little about the old Fongyi township. There wasn't any crowd during weekday afternoon, took my sweet time to explore this little academy, very peaceful and pleasant visit.

This place is absolutely worth a visit. It contains a lot of history not only of the academy but also of the area. Unfortunately it is mostly in Chinese, but still I liked it very much. There is also a small restaurant. We got a special historical room offered for lunch at no extra cost. There is a short walk from the MRT station Dadong to reach the academy.

A historically designated and maintained academy from the Qing Dynasty era. Established in 1814 in the old ''New City'' now the Fongshan district of Kaohsiung. A museum and artistic reconstruction of a historical site. The beautiful original architecture of the Qing era academy buildings remains, and houses within are era specific historical artifacts. Well worth the visit if you are at all interested in history, or architecture. The modern cartoonish statues help bring the place alive.

The restoration team is very careful to preserve the monuments and buildings. Precious records are preserved in ancient monuments.
