One Day in Okinawa: The Perfect Itinerary

Okinawa sits apart from the rest of Japan in almost every way. The food is different, the history is different, and the pace of life feels closer to the tropics than to Tokyo. If you are working through a list of things to do in Okinawa and only have a single day, the good news is that the island's top experiences are close enough together to make a full and satisfying itinerary without rushing. Here is how to spend 24 hours well.

Morning: Shuri Castle and a Local Breakfast (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

8:00 AM – Breakfast in Naha

Start your morning in Naha, Okinawa's main city. Head to Makishi Public Market or one of the small soba shops nearby and order a bowl of Okinawa soba. This is not the buckwheat noodle dish you find on the mainland. It is a pork-based broth with thick wheat noodles, slow-braised ribs, and fish cake. It is filling, affordable, and the right way to begin the day.

9:00 AM – Shuri Castle

From central Naha, Shuri Castle is about a 15-minute taxi ride or a short trip on the Yui Rail monorail to Shuri Station, followed by a 15-minute walk uphill. The castle was the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom for several centuries and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The architecture is distinct from anything you will find in mainland Japan, with deep red lacquered walls and Chinese-influenced design that reflects Okinawa's history as an independent trading kingdom.

Allow around 90 minutes to walk through the main hall, the gardens, and the surrounding grounds. The views over Naha from the upper terrace are worth the climb on their own.

11:00 AM – Head North

By 11:00 AM, make your way back toward central Naha and pick up a rental car. Driving is the most practical way to reach the northern part of the main island, and the expressway makes the journey straightforward. The drive to the Motobu Peninsula, where the Churaumi Aquarium is located, takes roughly 90 minutes depending on traffic.

Afternoon: Churaumi Aquarium and the North (12:30 PM – 5:30 PM)

12:30 PM – Lunch at Ocean Expo Park

Ocean Expo Park, which surrounds the aquarium, has several casual dining options. Pick up something light here before heading inside. Okinawa taco rice, a local invention that layers seasoned taco-style beef over white rice with cheese and salsa, is widely available in the area and makes for a quick, satisfying lunch.

1:30 PM – Churaumi Aquarium

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world and the centerpiece of Ocean Expo Park. The main draw is the Kuroshio Sea tank, a vast acrylic panel holding whale sharks, manta rays, and thousands of other species in a single breathtaking display. Feeding times for the whale sharks draw a crowd, so check the schedule when you arrive and plan around it.

Spend around two hours inside. The coral reef exhibits, the dolphin lagoon outside, and the touch pools are all worth your time.

The Kouri Ocean Tower sits at the island's highest point and offers panoramic views of the surrounding sea and the long bridge connecting Kouri to the mainland. The water here is a clear, pale blue that photographs well in the afternoon light. The drive across the bridge alone is a highlight.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour here before heading back south.

Evening: Dinner and a Slow Wind-Down (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM)

6:00 PM – Return to Naha

The drive back to Naha takes around 90 minutes in the evening. Return the rental car and make your way to the Kokusai Street area, which is the main thoroughfare for restaurants, shops, and street food.

7:00 PM – Dinner

For dinner, look for a restaurant serving Okinawan cuisine. Champuru dishes, which are stir-fries made with bitter melon, tofu, egg, and pork, are the local staple. Rafute, a slow-braised pork belly cooked in soy sauce and awamori (Okinawa's local rice spirit), is another dish worth ordering. Pair it with a small glass of awamori on the rocks to round out the meal.

The streets around Makishi and the lanes just off Kokusai Street have smaller, less touristy options if you are willing to wander a little.

8:30 PM – Evening Walk

After dinner, take a slow walk back along Kokusai Street. There are pottery shops selling shisa figurines, the lion-dog guardians that appear on rooftops across the island, and plenty of places to pick up snacks or local sweets like chinsuko shortbread to take home. If you want a hands-on cultural souvenir from your visit, the Okinawa Shisa Experience at Ryukyukiln offers painting sessions that can be booked in advance.

By 9:00 PM, you will have covered a castle, a world-class aquarium, a scenic island detour, and two proper Okinawan meals. That is a full day by any measure.
