Cairns sits at the edge of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, which means even a single day here puts you within reach of some of the most extraordinary natural landscapes on the planet. If you're looking for things to do in Cairns and only have 24 hours to work with, this itinerary will help you make smart choices without burning yourself out.
This day is built around one big experience in the morning, a relaxed lunch, a manageable afternoon activity, and a memorable evening on the water. No racing between attractions. No skipping meals. Just a well-paced day that actually feels like a holiday.

Morning (7:00am – 12:30pm): Into the Rainforest
7:00am Start early. The heat and humidity build quickly in Far North Queensland, so getting out before 8am makes a real difference to your comfort. Grab a flat white and a bite at one of the cafes along the Esplanade before heading to your first experience.
8:00am Make your way to Smithfield Terminal, about 15 minutes north of the city centre by car or taxi, to board the Return Skyrail Rainforest Cableway Experience. This is one of those experiences that genuinely lives up to the hype. You'll glide in a gondola above the rainforest canopy, with stops at Barron Gorge and Red Peak stations where you can step out onto boardwalks and take in views that feel almost unreal. The return journey gives you a different perspective on the way back down.
Allow around two to two and a half hours for the full return trip, including time at the mid-stations. This is not something to rush.
10:30am Back at Smithfield, if you want to extend your rainforest morning, the nearby village of Kuranda is a short walk or shuttle ride from the upper Skyrail terminal. The Kuranda Koala Gardens Entry Tickets are worth grabbing if you have a spare 45 minutes and want to hold a koala or get close to some of Australia's more unusual wildlife.
12:00pm Head back toward the city. The drive from Smithfield takes around 15 minutes.

Lunch (12:30pm – 1:30pm): Eat Well, Don't Rush
12:30pm The Cairns waterfront precinct has a solid range of lunch options. For seafood, Ochre Restaurant on Shields Street is a local favourite with a menu that leans into native Australian ingredients. If you'd prefer something more casual, the Night Markets food court on the Esplanade is open during the day and offers a wide range of cuisines at reasonable prices. Either way, sit down, rest your legs, and take your time.

Afternoon (1:30pm – 5:00pm): Out on the Water
1:30pm After lunch, walk down to the Reef Fleet Terminal, which is about five minutes on foot from most waterfront restaurants. This is where you'll depart for your afternoon on the reef.
For something a little different from the standard reef cruise, consider the Dreamtime Dive from Reef Fleet Terminal. This experience combines snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef with Indigenous cultural interpretation, giving you a deeper understanding of the reef's significance beyond what most tours offer. It's one of the more thoughtful ways to spend an afternoon on the water.
Alternatively, if you're after something with a bit more adrenaline before you head out to the reef, the Cairns Jet Boat Ride departs from the marina and takes about 35 minutes. It's a good option if you want to burn off some energy before a more relaxed evening.
4:30pm Return to the marina and head back to your accommodation to freshen up. You've earned a shower.

Evening (6:00pm – 9:00pm): Sunset on the Water
6:00pm There's no better way to finish a day in Cairns than on the water at sunset. The Cairns Harbour and Dinner Cruise departs from the Marlin Marina and offers a two-hour cruise around Trinity Inlet with a buffet dinner included. The light on the water as the sun drops behind the hills is genuinely beautiful, and having dinner sorted means you don't need to think about where to eat afterward.
The cruise typically wraps up around 8:30pm to 9:00pm, leaving you back at the marina with enough time for a quiet drink along the Esplanade before calling it a night.

Practical Notes
Getting around: A combination of taxis and rideshares works well for this itinerary. Cairns is compact enough that most transfers are short and affordable.
What to pack: Reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain jacket (afternoon showers are common), comfortable walking shoes, and a swimsuit. Bring cash for smaller vendors and markets.
Booking ahead: The Skyrail and any reef experiences should be booked in advance, especially during peak season between June and September. Last-minute availability can be limited.
